Steve Lafferty is working hard for you in Maryland's District 42A

Steve and Betsy have lived in the Towson communities of Stoneleigh and Idlewylde for nearly 40 years. Steve’s commitment to serving his community, and to public service, is the foundation of his involvement in the Towson area. Steve believes in giving back to the community where he lives and working to improve the lives of others. He has been, and continues to be, a leader in bringing improvements to Towson’s neighborhoods and business community. He has worked to protect open space, improving and strengthening our schools, and to involving citizens in local and state government decisions.

Steve has served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2007 and currently represents District 42A that is focused in the Towson area. The district runs, roughly, from the City line to the Beltway and from Charles Street to Loch Raven Boulevard.

Steve a member of the Environment and Transportation Committee (formerly Environmental Matters). He chairs the Subcommittee on Land Use and Ethics and serves on the Environment Subcommittee. He is a respected leader on land use and Chesapeake Bay related issues. He also currently chairs the Baltimore County House delegation and the House Speaker’s Regional Revitalization Workgroup.

During his time in the legislature, Steve has been recognized as a Legislative Champion by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, a Green Champion by the League of Conservation Voters and a Municipal Super Star by the Maryland Municipal League. His leadership on environmental, housing and community issues has won him praise from teachers, community leaders and environmental advocates. He has received the Lorraine Sheehan Memorial Award for Outstanding Advocacy from the Community Development Network, the Vernon P. Johnson Exceptional Citizenship Stewardship Award from the Oyster Recovery Partnership, the 2014 Legislative Achievement of the Year award from the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition and an award for his leadership on efforts to protect bees and other pollinators from the Maryland Smart on Pesticides Coalition.

  • Served as the Director of Special Projects for the Howard County Executive and as the County’s Deputy Director of Planning and Zoning.
  • Former director of Smart Growth and neighborhood and business revitalization programs at the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and in the Baltimore County Office of Community Conservation.
  • Steve has practiced law, taught school in the Baltimore City School System, served as Executive Director of the Baltimore American Indian Center, and has served on the boards of various, local non-profit organizations.
