The 2010 Session of the Maryland General Assembly is about to begin. It has been an honor to serve the people of the 42nd District for the past three years and I look forward to working with you during the coming months.
This will be a very difficult year. The State's budget will be our main focus. Revenues are down but the needs of our citizens have not decreased. In fact, unemployment is high, people are losing their homes due to foreclosures, businesses are struggling and health care, energy and food costs are increasing. We will need to reduce the budget and still find a way to meet our important needs.
We will face other challenging issues as well: creating and maintaining jobs, keeping education strong, teachers' pensions, college tuitions, protecting communities against sex offenders, transparency in the way our government works, protecting the Chesapeake Bay and helping consumers. Clearly, it will be a very busy Session.
Locally, I will continue to work with neighborhoods and Towson University to ensure good relations; to see that our schools - including the new West Towson Elementary School, Ridgley Middle School and Carver High School - are the best they can be; that our streets and communities are safe; and, that our waterways are protected. I welcome your comments and suggestions about these issues, and others that are important to you, your family, our district and our state.
During the Session, feel free to contact me at 410-841-3487 or Stephen.Lafferty@house.state.md.us. Please come by to see me in Room 306 in the Lowe House Office Building if you are in Annapolis. I look forward to hearing from you.
