Steve's News from Annapolis

2014-01-17

The 2014 Session of the Maryland General Assembly began on January 8. Usually the first few sessions are largely ceremonial.  This year included remembrances and tributes to six former members of the House, including former House Speaker John Hanson Briscoe, who died since the 2013 session ended. It is always humbling to hear about those who preceded us and who dedicated themselves to public service as representatives of their communities.

I was also honored to be unanimously re-elected Vice Chair of the Baltimore County House delegation. I certainly appreciate the confidence my colleagues show in my ability to share the leadership with John Olszewski, who was also unanimously re-elected as Delegation Chair.

I will continue to serve on the Environmental Matters Committee and its Land Use and Ethics and Environment Subcommittees. I will also continue to serve the Joint Audit Committee, the Joint Committee on the Critical Areas and the bi-partisan Regional Revitalization Workgroup. I will continue to work to protect Maryland’s environment, including the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries; to protect consumer rights; to support education in Baltimore County; and, to find ways to improve and enhance housing opportunities.

The House will tackle a number of significant issues including the State budget, support for pre-K education, raising the minimum wage, renewable energy, legalization of marijuana and public school construction. Other substantial issues will likely also be raised.

I am honored to represent the 42nd district and greatly appreciate the confidence you have shown in me over the past seven years. I am very pleased that Marsha Tracey will continue as my Legislative Aide. I am also fortunate to have a Session Intern, Grace Parrish, a senior at the University of Maryland in College Park, who is majoring in Environmental Sustainability.

Please feel free to contact me at Stephen.Lafferty@house.state.md.us or 410-841-3487 if you have questions, need assistance or have issues of concern that you want me to know about.  I am fortunate that I have many constituents who have contacted me and frequently commented on my timely response to their concerns.

Thank you and best wishes for 2014.
