Steve Lafferty is working hard for you in Maryland's 42nd District

Steve has been involved in his community and public service throughout his adult life. He believes in giving back to the community where he lives. He has been a leader in planning for Towson's future, assisting neighborhoods, addressing the need for open space, providing needed school improvements, services to seniors, and the involvement of citizens in government decisions.

Now, as a Delegate from Baltimore County’s 42nd District, Steve is serving the people and businesses of Towson, Timonium, Lutherville, Loch Raven/Oakleigh and Smith-Greenspring. He is a member of the Environmental Matters Committee and has become a respected leader on land use and Chesapeake Bay related issues. He has been recognized as a 2009 Legislative Champion by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. STEVE'S BACKGROUND


  • Married for 31 years to Betsy; long time resident of Stoneleigh; has lived in the district for over 25 years.

  • Currently the Director of Special Projects for the Howard County Executive; formerly the County’s Deputy Director of Planning and Zoning

  • Former director of various Smart Growth and revitalization programs for neighborhoods and businesses at the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and with the Baltimore County government

  • Steve has practiced law, taught school in the Baltimore City School System and has served on the boards of various, local non-profit organizations.

CIVIC AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

Prior to Steve’s election, he was deeply involved with communities throughout the county and state. He has worked with dozens of civic, community and political organizations to help make our communities great places to live, work and play. These include:

  • Founding Board Member, Neighborspace of Baltimore County, 2002-2006

  • Rebuilding Together, Howard County, 2004-2006

  • President, Central Baltimore County Democratic Club, 1999-2003,

  • Board of Directors, Pro-Bono Counseling Project, 1999-2001

  • President, Timothy House, Inc. (senior citizen housing), 1996-1999, Board of Trustees 1993-1999

  • Maryland Commission on Neighborhoods, 1995-1997

  • Baltimore County Planning Board, 1990-1995

  • Board of Directors, East Towson Coalition, Inc., 1993-1995

  • President, Greater Towson Council of Community Associations, 1989-1991, Vice President 1987-1988, Representative 1986-1997
